Cash for Clunkers Starts on July 27th

Update: July 24, 2009

The official NHTSA website is now posting information advising consumers that the Cash for Clunker program will start on Monday July 27, 2009.

The Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS),  is operated by the NHTSA which was given the task of implementing the provisions in the Cash for Clunkers bill.  The bill was signed by President Obama in June and consumers must be patient while the NHTSA sets up the program.

Qualify Your Clunker

If you would to view the  Combined MPG of your old clunker to see if it gets 18 or less miles per gallon, use this link: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm .  The Federal website is what all car dealers will be using for qualifying a clunker.  No other website data should be used.

If your clunker on this website is showing that it gets an combined miles per gallon of 19 miles per gallon, your clunker does not qualify EVEN IF your current gas mileage is much less.

Have a Dealer Call You

If your “clunker” qualifies and you would like a local dealer to call you about purchasing a new car when the program starts, complete the form on the left.  Most car dealers will be participating, so you can also call a local dealer on your own.
