The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has published the offical phone number for questions regarding the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS).  The CARS program was created  by the signing of the Cash for Clunkers bill on June 23, 2009.

The website is now also showing a “Submit a Question” button which is not fully operational but may provide consumers with the ability to send in specific questions to be answered.

Car Allowance Rebate System

The President signed into law a program the NHTSA is calling the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS).   The bill that President Obama signed on June 23, 2009  included a provision that was commonly referred to as the “Cash for Clunkers” bill which funded the CARS program.

The CARS program will help consumers purchase a new, more fuel efficient vehicle when you trade in a less fuel efficient vehicle. You can read the official Frequently Asked Questions  page on http://cars.gov. 

While the CARS Act makes transactions on and after July 1 potentially eligible for credits under the CARS program, interested dealers and consumers may want to wait until all of the detailed issues that must be addressed in the implementing regulations are resolved and the final rule is issued. Issuance will occur around July 23.

Qualifying Your Clunker Car

Consumers who would like to see if their “clunker car” qualifies can start by checking http://fueleconomy.gov to make sure their car is rated at a combined mpg of 18 mpg or less.
