I have an Audi TT Quattro 228hp Turbo with 80,000 miles, 2002 for trade or Clunker. Average mpg 23. I also have a 1973 Mercedes Benz 280SEL 4.5 Litre V-8, loaded, 195hp 10mpg, premium -which I hoped would also be a Clunker for Cash worth $4,500 in trade. My Mercedes Clunker cost me $5,000 at point of purchase and I can document $24,000 of mechanical work. I also have a 1992 Ford Aerostar, Eddie Bauer Edition 154,000 miles available for trade or Clunker. I would like to work a deal for a used ,2007 Mazda MX-5 from Coutesy Mazda from Philip Cisneros at Courtesy Mazda (two models available used MX-5 soft top (21,500 or MX-5 Hard Top folding SLK 320 Hard Top folding) or a Mercedes SLK 320 2001 Certified --Or is this only for 2009 or 2010 only

Clunker is 1987 Grand Wagoneer (11 MPG) - won't trade for Lincoln MKZ getting 21 MPG. but will trade for Ford Taurus getting 22 MPG.
Seems that 21mpg -vs- 11mpg is +10mpg and I never understood that mileage had to double in order for clunker to qualify. Something doesn't seem to be Kosher here?????

People need to read these complaints. All of the red tape and loopholes, etc. It's NOTHING compared to what our health care will look like if that "plan" gets rammed through too quickly. It's three o'clock a.m. and your chest is still hurting. You go to the E.R. and they find out that you have the Grand Prix with the 3.8 litre engine. What? The "list" says that it gets 19 mpg, not 18. Sorry! Next...

I finished suppling the dealer with the required documentation for the C for C transaction on July 27th and the dealer still has not gotten the voucher number from the government. I was the second one that the dealer had submitted and since then they have done a couple of hundred others. Many of which they have already received the ok for. I can't figure if the dealer is pulling my chain and going to sell the car at a higher price or if the government is that screwed up. Neither would surprise me.

I'm often suspicious of government programs, but Cash For Clunkers seems to be doing some good in these difficult economic times. Replacing an old gas guzzler with a new fuel-efficient car reduces air pollution, reduces dependence on foreign oil, and stimulates the auto industry (foreign and domestic) at a very appropriate time. I'd like to see a modest increase in the gas tax, to get even more old cars off the road. America does need to use less oil; Cash for Clunkers is a small step in the right direction.

Can someone do more than one CFC Deal? Dealers keep telling me no, but I can't find anything official that confirms that. By the way, my first deal was great! No hassle, quick, easy!!!!

Does anyone know how long it takes the dealership to obtain the voucher number? Our dealer submitted the paperwork 3 days ago. We cannot take delivery until they receive that voucher number, and in the meantime we are without a vehicle (since they have the trade-in).

The dealers do not have to give you the scrap value + your rebate, they just have to inform you of what the scrap value of your car is. You don't automatically get that on top of your rebate.

You left off a very important fact! The dealer has to give you the scrap value for your trade-in as well as the credit.

This is very important- you need to add it to your graphic!!!

In my opinion, a negotiated deal for the new car should be agreed upon....then (and only then)the rebate deducted from the bottom line. Don't let the dealer show the price of the new car with the rebate deducted from the price, then deduct the wholesale value of your trade-in. It should be new car price minus trade in value, then the rebate deducted.

What a scam. Because I buy a new vehicle every 2 or 3 years, my car is valued at more than $4,500 so I can't participate in the program. Gee, I'd like to get a rebate for purchasing a more fuel efficient vehicle. I current drive a Honda Civic (which gets about 36 combined mpg so I'm also disqualified on that point), but I'm looking at a Hybrid. Why am I being put at a disadvantage? I've been responsible for years by driving fuel efficient vehicles and purchasing new vehicles which pumps tens of thousands of dollars into the economy. I love how I'm being screwed over by the government.

Liz, the car does not have to be working well, just working. You don't need to drive the clunker to the dealer to make the deal. The dealers I have worked with will negotiate with you based on your telling them your clunker's year, make, model, engine, etc. (Check out fueleconomy.gov for what you need to know to find out the mpg.) Once you have settled on a price for the new car, the dealer will want the registration, proof of insurance (for 2 policy years), title, etc. The dealer will tell you when to bring in the clunker.

I think this program is unfair to state an 19 MPG limit. I have a 96 toyota camry with over 200 thousand miles and an oil leak; it is a clanker!!!! But according to the website I have a combined MPG of 21. That's a bunch of crap! I would have believed that 10 or more years ago but not now with the milage on this car. I think they should really consider incresing the MPG to give us true clankers a chance!

Carlos - first of all, you did not get $4500 for free. You had to trade something of value for it - your 92 BMW. If KBB says your car is worth $1500, you only really received $3000. But hold on - that $3000 is not free either. That rebate comes from taxes or $ printed by the Fed. The latter will cause an indirect tax to all in the form of inflation - i.e.: getting less for your earned $. Has anyone considered the energy needed to dispose of the "clunkers" or the energy consumed by creating a new car to replace the drivable vehicle. Dealers make little $ on selling new cars - they make most of their $ on reselling trades. Also more newer cars on the road equals less repair work for automotive technicians - so think again about this helping families of dealership workers. And what about the consequent reduction of cars in the used car market. Low income people do not qualify for new car loans and cannot afford a new car even with a rebate. It is clear that this will do little for the economy and the environment. It is mainly a taxpayer subsidized payoff to the UAW for helping some politicians get elected.

Does anybody know what the gov means by drivability? My sister has a 92 Buick Roadmaster which qualifies for $3500, but i don't want her to take it up there and be denied because it has engine gremlins and leaks fluids. It starts, goes forward and backwards, and she recently got it to quit overheating. I can't find any definition on it and i know they're just going to crush these cars so how well does it need to drive?

I agree with Carlos. Being up front and honest seems like the best policy. Besides, the process takes forever. If u tell them ahead about the clunker they can start it while u find ur new car. And if after the rebate the price seems a little high, or out of your budget, then I'm sure that hoensty will pay off and you can negotiate.

And George, it does cost the dealerships as they lost about $500 in taxes and fees as this $4500 is off the price before taxes, so when they work out the fees they lost on that end. Stop being so greedy. It's no wonder the rest of the world hates us. And FYI, I bought a Civic as well and they gave it to me for $100 over invoice. That was without negotiating either, that was their offer.

Guys,

This program really sucks. None of US automaker sedans qalify unless they are and old v8 model. We took a 89 pontial boneville and it get 19 mpg according to govement website. 89 buick century 20 mpg 89 ford taurus 20mpg 89 chrysler new york 19 mpg all thease cars are not eligiable.
Who are we kidding none of those cars got that gas milage, back twenty years ago, and definately not getting it now. So US automakers lost sales then and will lose sales now. Where did Obahma got 18 mile per gallon is still a mystary.

Carlos, there is nothing wrong with what Stan did.

It's your own fault if you don't know how to get the best deal. Cash for Clunkers isn't costing the dealerships a dime.

I'm the person who wrote that my 94 Dodge Caravan, 2 WD, 6 cyl,3.3 L, automatic 4 speed was left off the Fuel Economy List. My car salesman and I have been making phone calls and sending emails to fueleconomy.gov looking for assistance. To my pleasant surprise, there has been an update today (7/26) and now the car is there. This afternoon, I went out and bought a new car and was able to get $4,500 for my clunker!!!!

I love cash for clunkers! I took my 1992 BMW 325i to Honda in Petaluma, CA and they were great and got me into a sweet 2009 Honda Civic.

I can't believe people like "Stan" who posted below me tried to low ball the dealership and not mention they had a cash for clunker trade in. Dude, you're getting $4500 for FREE!!!! What's your problem? Anyone who goes in and acts that shady, I would've told them to take off, too.

People say that car dealers are shady, but now with the internet I believe it's the customers that are shady and decietful. Everything you buy is marked up. You think detergent at Target costs them $10? Try $1.22. But I don't see you trying to haggle the price with them.

Car salesman have families to feed and bills to pay as well. Stop trying to rip them off. Be up front and honest and you'll probably get a better deal. ESPECIALLY when you are getting $4500 for free for that POS you are driving.

Just my two cents...

Clunker program, what clunker program?? - Today We went to buy a car today at Bill Reilly's Union City, GA Toyota and were met by a nice young salesperson in training and a more experienced one who was training her on the tricks of the trade. We were asked if we perhaps had a clunker to trade so that they could give us a good deal.
We were silent on the subject of trade-ins while attempting to make the best deal possible. When we had finished the painful process of negotiating and were ready to start the paper work, we told them about our clunker. At that point, we were told that the clunker program was over and that they would be happy to evaluate our trade-in exclusive of the clunker program and continue with the sale. We said no thank-you and went next door to Nalley Honda where their very nice salesperson confirmed the clunker program was alive and well at their establishment. However, we actually found our best deal at Allen Vigil Ford in Morrow where they happily gave us $4,500 for our clunker.
Happy Shopping!

I think its a great program.

I just have one problem with it. My car is a 1989 Ford Taurus and had a combined epa rating of 21(in 1989) . However, I can assure you that 20 years down the road it is getting much worse fuel economy. So I think this requirement shouldn't be based on what they used to get for fuel economy, but what they currently get. I also understand that it would to a bit of driving and a few gallons of fuel to check the current fuel economy.

This is just my 2 cents. I wish my car did meet this requirement (since I do meet the rest) so I could purchase a newer, safer, and more economical car.

The program is missing clunkers. I have a 1979 GMC 3/4 ton that meets all requirement except it's too old. It gets about 5 mpg and leaks oil all over the place. It is my "beater". Two weeks I bought an '09 1500 Silverado. They would give me $1000 on my '79. I kept it. It will continue to leak oil and get rotten mileage, and I will keep using it. This is a real clunker that needed go be scrapped. The program missed the real clunkers. That $4500 would have been nice towards this new truck. Oh well!

This program is lame. I recently got an offer from air quality control to buy my clunker, but just like this program it didn't qualify.
That program stipulate that your car has to have been registered 'consecutively' for the past 3 years. My car wasn't registered for 2 months during 2008, so no deal.
This program requires 18mpg or less, mine gets 30+, so no deal.
Bottom line, my car is old, and does pollute but I can't afford to buy another car so this one STAYS ON THE ROAD. Yet again, the govenment has failed their objective...Good Job.
These programs are lame.

"All these cars lost to cash for clunkers cannot be used to harvest parts from. Not even a simple bolt."

No - it says on the cars.gov site that all of the parts except the engine, transmission, & driveline may be sold prior to the dealer disposing of the vehicle. Even parts of the driveline can be sold as long as it is dismantled. Of course, if it's a vehicle that's parts don't bring much, the dealer probably won't mess with it...

-from cars.gov
"parts of the vehicle, other
than the engine block and drive train (unless the drive train is sold in separate parts), may
be sold prior to disposal."

This great program will drive car sales in America through the roof! What a great way to get old, polluting, unsafe clunkers off the road, and get newer, safer, less polluting ones out there. No one is being forced to sell their cars; this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and will save thousands of jobs in the auto manufacturing ad sales industries. Thank you, America!

Thanks to all you dopes who can take advantage of this job killing idea. Imagine the salvage yards that no longer can harvest usable parts from your old car. Imagine your neighbor who can no longer get parts for their car because they will no longer be available. I won't be able to locate engines or transmissions for for people to keep their cars running. All these cars lost to cash for clunkers cannot be used to harvest parts from. Not even a simple bolt. All have to be melted down and used for something else. Does not make much sense.

My 9000lb f-250 gets over 18 mpg, that number for mpg's is way too low. My dad wants to get rid of his rusted out escort but it still gets 30mpg, it is a 'clunker'

I have a '96 dodge caravan that, according to the website, has a combined mpg of 19 (but I dont' think it's close to that now). If I had the 3.3 litre, the mpg would be 18, but I have the 3.0 litre engine. Although this car is one over the max of 18, I implore someone to make an exception. The car drives, but it has so many problems, it's really not safe. NONE of the guages work, so I have no idea how fast I'm going, or how much gas I have left. The horn doesn't work, and it's getting very difficult to start. Most of the problems are due to a faulty computer module that costs about $600. It has so many noises, and problems that would cost us several thousand dollars to fix. It just doesn't make sense to invest any more money in this car. We're in desperate need of another vehicle, and this cash for clunker program would help us tremendously. We really want to get a car with about 30mpg to help us save on gas (like a Focus). Is there someone to write to to possibly get an exception?

I have a 1994 Pontiac Bonneville. The website for the government has to check the combined mpg is http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/sbs.htm which shows two cars that are exactly the same. One car would qualify at 18 combined, the other would not at 20 combined MPG. I have called the number listed and several dealers and no one seems to be able to help me. The car qualifies for every other stipulation.

My Ford Contour is missing overdrive, we don't drive it on the highway anymore only around town. This program seems a perfect way to get rid of a piece of junk, and let the taxpayer's pay for it. When will the reckless spending of our grand-kids money end?

my day passed in jan 09. my son inherited his 1986 dodge pick up D150 in which was titled in my dad' name since 1986. In march of this year I had the truck retitled in my son's name. does this qualify for the cash for clunkers program?

My mother in law’s car is a total clunker. It’s registered in my brother in law’s name and insured in her name. Does anyone know if we could still qualify for the program? The program says you need to show proof of insurance and title for the past year…which we have, but they’re not all in one person’s name. I’m upset because I don’t think we’ll qualify for this.

The graphic above is pretty clear. If your car's combined city/highway gas mileage is not 18 mpg or less then you don't qualify.
