The NHTSA has created a visual gauge to show how much funding is left in the program.

The link for the gauge is: http://www.cars.gov

The numbers are based on approved sales and not those that are under review or those that have not been submitted.

Dealers are encouraged to check the Cash for Clunkers Gauge frequently.

Has anyone had the experience where the dealor got your signatures on the clunker program papers and then told you the car they had was sold. It happened to me today at Broadway toyota, and it smells fishy.

You guys who are wondering if your cars would qualify as “clunkers” all need to visit http://www.fueleconomy.gov and select your particular vehicles to see what the EPA says your combined city/highway mileage is. It would be difficult if not impossible for someone here to know what options your particular cars have, it asks for the transmission and engine sizes in order to tell you what the mpg is.

Ang, I told the dealer right up front that we had a clunker to trade in, they added the 4500 to their 1500 Nissan Rebate and I got my new Altima for 32% off of sticker price. There was no haggling involved, check BBB.org for the better business bureau’s take on a particular dealer was the best way I found to find a good dealer and not a ripoff shop like the first dealer we visited that were barely giving me 1500 off of sticker price and come to find out had a D- BBB rating, wished we’d have checked there first. It would have saved us about 2 hours with the D- dealer. Incidently, the dealer we purchased from has an A+ rating.

Cash for clunkers engine disablement procedure spews more smoke, oil, coolant into the enviroment then running the engine normally for another 100,000 miles. Stop this madness!

Does a 1992 Accord qualify for the cash for clunkers. I would be purchasing either an Accord or Civic 2009. Please email me at

Yes, I agree with Brian Arnold in that this has been in the news for several months now and I have been watching it since early May. I went and did my deal at the end of June as I wanted to be ready for delivery by the original start date of the program which was July 1st. Then the news came out advising dealers and consumers to wait until July 24th for the final ruling to be available and I had to wait an entire month to complete my deal. I rec’d a call from my dealer on July 21 to come and pickup my vehicle and signed the contract on July 26th. I am certainly glad I was ahead of the game on this one but I had no idea the money would go THIS quickly! Whew!

Diane, there was news about this program far more than 28 days ago and long before that; I have been reading about it for months and following the legislation. You were screwed by your own failure to pay attention. Does someone have to hold your hand?

What is the best way to negotiate pricing for new vehicle, without letting the dealership know you have a cash for clunker vehicle to trade in?

  14. Frank says:

    Diane,

This program has been in the public domain since at least February. I have been waiting since then myself. It was no secret and was signed into law on June 23. If you bought early it was of your own necessity.

28 days ago we just purchased a 2009 Grand Caravan because our 1994 Dodge Ram was a gas guzzler. I am saddened because we are unable to get cash for our clunker. It would have been nice to receive $4500 off our new vehicle. But if anyone was going to get screwed…it was us…
