The NHTSA released today data that shows the top 10 car models that were purchased under the Cash for Clunkers program. As of today, the NHTSA has received 184,304 sales to be reviewed totaling $775,200.00. You can see why we were concerned last week about how quickly the funding would run out.
The sales data shared by the NHTSA confirms our earlier predictions of car sales data from our survey on June 29, 2009. (See Chart) Our survey predicted that Toyota, Honda and Ford would lead in new car sales. In fact seven out of the top 10 models come from these three manufacturers. As data is updated over the coming month, we will keep you in the loop on our Twitter feed: http://twitter.com/cashclunkers

Here is the data sent to us by the NHTSA on August 5, 2009 at 3:30 pm.
1. Toyota Corolla
2. Ford Focus FWD
3. Honda Civic
4. Toyota Prius
5. Toyota Camry
6. Hyundai Elantra
7. Ford Escape FWD
8. Dodge Caliber
9. Honda Fit
10. Chevrolet Cobalt
We surveyed over 50,000 consumers and asked them what car they plan to buy under the CARS program. The NHTSA released numbers today that show GM in the lead with Toyota and Ford in second and third place respectively.
Toyota continues to lead in brand preference from our data since we break GM into its brand units. We predict that when the program ends Toyota or Ford will be giving GM a run for their money for the title of most units sold. The only concern we have is whether Ford has enough inventory to meet the demand.
