Monday Night, August 24th will be the last day for the NHTSA Cash for Clunkers program.
NHTSA Ray LaHood confirmed today that the program will end this Monday night putting to rest any uncertainty about how the program will wind down.
Consumers are advised to read three articles before they go shopping. Consumers should call ahead to local dealers to make sure that they can get the car you want before the program expires.
The car does not have to be in their current stock but they do have to get a VIN# to enter in the sale to the NHTSA system.
You can also use the convenient form on the left and ask a dealer to call you from your area.

As some of us have suspected for weeks, there’s probably more to this story. Following the NHTSA’s own acccounting, there’s at least $1 billion of CARS funding left…which could supposedly run the program for at least an additional 2-3 weeks.
So why shut the program down early??? I’ve got a few ideas…
1. Even though the NHTSA tripled its staff last week, they simply cannot process CARS applications as fast as they have been stacking up. The NHTSA is constantly trying to “catch up”…which will never happen UNTIL the incoming flow of applications finally stops. They seem to be somewhere between 2-4 weeks behind…based upon posts on this website.
2. Because they are running so far behind, they really can’t pinpoint EXACTLY WHEN the money will run out. If they don’t know when to stop the program, they could end up with thousands of pending clunker deals in the pipeline that won’t be funded. Or they could just let the program go forward, knowing that it will go over-budget. Either scenario is a publicity nightmare.
3. As anyone with a calculator can figure out, this program is probably a lot closer to the $3B budget right now than anyone knows. As I have been spouting off about for weeks…if there really are 16,000 dealers registered (and all are actually participating), then the $3B would be gone by now if each dealer made just TWO clunker deals per day since July 27th.
We should have more time and you people should have more money for the program. Don’t let it end, this program should go for at lease 4 months. do what ever you have to, but don’t let it die.
Well if you read the statement, dealers are allowed to resubmit the claim, allowing they made the initial deadline with their first submittal.
What happens if my dealer has submitted my paperwork before the deadline, but the government rejects the application over a minor detail after the deadline? Will the dealer be permitted to resubmit with the amended application?
